Cooling Petal

Adaptive architecture

A modular terracotta facade unit that cools by evaporation, drawn from North African mashrabiya screens.

The system translates vernacular evaporative cooling into a contemporary facade. Water distribution channels and structural framing are integrated into a modular assembly that carries petal-shaped ceramic panels.

As ambient air passes over the wetted unglazed terracotta, evaporation lowers the temperature and improves comfort in hot, arid climates with no mechanical HVAC involved.

Each unit snaps into a grid of support rails and water manifolds, so installation is quick, maintenance is straightforward, and the array expands without redesign. The petals are held by stainless steel rings and rods, carbon fiber straps and clevis rod ends.
